Plot[]

One day at the palace, one of the windows is smashed and Cornelius thinks that Alexander broke it since he is in front of it. Flora says that she broke it, and then Pom says that he broke it, Cornelius is suddenly confused. Babar says he will talk to the children about this. When Babar asks the children what happened they all say they didn't break the window, so Babar tells them a story that might just help.

Back in his younger days as a King, Celesteville had just commissioned a new railway, this will help bring medicine, supplies, and knowledge from different lands. While they are celebrating, Pompadour comes in the room with some bad news. Lord Rataxes has set up a roadblock on the Expresses current route, Babar says that the land is not in Rhinoland, but Pompadour tells Babar that Rataxes just claimed it earlier today, Arthur and Zephir are sad about this which means Babar won't get another place in the history books. Babar has an idea to reroute the line through another part of the jungle, so the train is going ahead as planned. Meanwhile, Rataxes is pleased to hear that his roadblock was a success but Basil comes in and tells Rataxes that Babar is making a detour. Angry, Rataxes says that the detour will give Babar another place in the history books, so he and Basil decide to go and stop the train from going on as planned.

While building the tracks, Babar, Cornelius and Pompadour are discussing the new route. Babar realizes that the route through Gorilla Gorge will have the train run through Pleasant Valley. The two ask Babar what is wrong with that route, he says it's fine. At the end of the work day, Zephir asks why Babar looks so glum, Babar tells Zephir about the new route, Babar says that Pleasant Valley is a special place, it was where he was born and where he lived before his mother died. Celeste and Arthur come into the car and tell Babar not only how much that place means to them but all the fun they had as well. Arthur even mentions the Polomoche, a horrible monster their mothers told them about when they were little, it has been said to roam Pleasant Valley. Zephir says that the Polomoche is just a ridiculous story, and that it does not scare him, yet the train whistle does. Zephir asks why he cannot speak up about the route, Celeste says that it's because he is King and that building the tracks through cannot take away their memories. Suddenly that night lots of workers are scared by something that is nearby; Arthur, Celeste and Zephir were scared out of their beds and appear as ghosts in sheets. Pompadour and Cornelius are unsure what happened but all decide to go back to bed.
